Pat Tillman (left) and his brother Kevin stand in front of a Chinook helicopter in Saudi Arabia before their tour of duty as Army Rangers in Iraq in 2003.

By Kevin Tillman

Editor’s note: Kevin Tillman joined the Army with his brother Pat in 2002, and they served together in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Pat was killed in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004. Kevin, who was discharged in 2005, has written a powerful, must-read document.

It is Pat’s birthday on November 6, and elections are the day after.  It gets me thinking about a conversation I had with Pat before we joined the military.  He spoke about the risks with signing the papers.  How once we committed, we were at the mercy of the American leadership and the American people.  How we could be thrown in a direction not of our volition.  How fighting as a soldier would leave us without a voice… until we got out.

Much has happened since we handed over our voice:

Somehow we were sent to invade a nation because it was a direct threat to the American people, or to the world, or harbored terrorists, or was involved in the September 11 attacks, or received weapons-grade uranium from Niger, or had mobile weapons labs, or WMD, or had a need to be liberated, or we needed to establish a democracy, or stop an insurgency, or stop a civil war we created that can’t be called a civil war even though it is.  Something like that.

Somehow our elected leaders were subverting international law and humanity by setting up secret prisons around the world, secretly kidnapping people, secretly holding them indefinitely, secretly not charging them with anything, secretly torturing them.  Somehow that overt policy of torture became the fault of a few “bad apples” in the military.

Somehow back at home, support for the soldiers meant having a five-year-old kindergartener scribble a picture with crayons and send it overseas, or slapping stickers on cars, or lobbying Congress for an extra pad in a helmet.  It’s interesting that a soldier on his third or fourth tour should care about a drawing from a five-year-old; or a faded sticker on a car as his friends die around him; or an extra pad in a helmet, as if it will protect him when an IED throws his vehicle 50 feet into the air as his body comes apart and his skin melts to the seat.

Somehow the more soldiers that die, the more legitimate the illegal invasion becomes.

Somehow American leadership, whose only credit is lying to its people and illegally invading a nation, has been allowed to steal the courage, virtue and honor of its soldiers on the ground.

Somehow those afraid to fight an illegal invasion decades ago are allowed to send soldiers to die for an illegal invasion they started.

Somehow faking character, virtue and strength is tolerated.

Somehow profiting from tragedy and horror is tolerated.

Somehow the death of tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of people is tolerated.

Somehow subversion of the Bill of Rights and The Constitution is tolerated.

Somehow suspension of Habeas Corpus is supposed to keep this country safe.

Somehow torture is tolerated.

Somehow lying is tolerated.

Somehow reason is being discarded for faith, dogma, and nonsense.

Somehow American leadership managed to create a more dangerous world.

Somehow a narrative is more important than reality.

Somehow America has become a country that projects everything that it is not and condemns everything that it is.

Somehow the most reasonable, trusted and respected country in the world has become one of the most irrational, belligerent, feared, and distrusted countries in the world.

Somehow being politically informed, diligent, and skeptical has been replaced by apathy through active ignorance.

Somehow the same incompetent, narcissistic, virtueless, vacuous, malicious criminals are still in charge of this country.

Somehow this is tolerated.

Somehow nobody is accountable for this.

In a democracy, the policy of the leaders is the policy of the people.  So don’t be shocked when our grandkids bury much of this generation as traitors to the nation, to the world and to humanity.  Most likely, they will come to know that “somehow” was nurtured by fear, insecurity and indifference, leaving the country vulnerable to unchecked, unchallenged parasites.

Luckily this country is still a democracy.  People still have a voice.  People still can take action.  It can start after Pat’s birthday.

Brother and Friend of Pat Tillman,

Kevin Tillman

Thank you for putting into words what I have felt for a very long time. As a military brat, vet, sister of two vets, one that served in Iraq, and a Ranger exwife, I stand behind what has been said. I, also, have been accused of being unpatriotic because of my views. This is strongly and elequently put, bravo!

    Kevin,
I am so sorry for your family’s loss.  I will pass this on to everyone in my email and mail.  Thank you for saying so well what so many of us feel and cannot put into words and from a real heroe’s perspective, from someone who has been there and knows the truth.  Every newspaper needs to print this the weekend before your brother’s birthday in honor of him.  god bless you and your family.

  • Comment #31043 by Cary  on  10/21  at  9:53 am

Kevin its voices like yours from the front lines. Men who have lost friends and family, that will lead us out of this misery. There are a lot of people in this country that feel that any negative comments towards our president or Iraq is seen as unpatriotic. You are helping, because people will listen to someone that has sacrificed as much as you have. In my eyes there is no one that could be more patriotic than you.

  • Comment #31041 by Constance Collinet  on  10/21  at  9:53 am

    Dear Kevin:

I just saw the movie “Flag of Our Fathers”.  Every aspect of war rips my heart out for Civilians and Military as well.

Your straight to the heart message should be printed in every newspaper across the country, starting with Bob Wooodward of the Washington Post.  I am sure your brother Pat’s name is just as famous as his.  Bob Woodward is capabile of getting your message out to the Public.

Patrick and you are inspirations to us all!  Keep writing, you have a gift and a duty now because of your tremendous loss.

Thank your for serving our country.  I hope to see more of you in print.  Respectfully submitted, Constance Collinet

You are right!  There are traitors to this country.  They give aid and comfort to our enemies.  They are “upstanding” citizens.” They are senators, representatives, newspapers. They are activist judges.  They hide behind the first amendment.  They pretend to “Love” this country.  But they wouldn’t lift a finger to protect it. In fact, many are actively fighting against us, concerned about our standing in the world.  The world wouldn’t lift a finger to help us, either.  You are also right about out grandkids, looking back and seeing the disgrace of so many Americans who turned their back on this country. What a sad commentary, to a lost life.  If you and he both felt that you were fighting and dying for nothing, then, I guess he did.

  • Comment #31039 by jdkchem  on  10/21  at  9:52 am

I am curious as to why so many “truth” sites exist.  And what the hell is “truth to power.” There is an awful lot of claims being made to the “truth” by those who cannot be bothered to be honest.  I am fed up with the “truth” sites and their inability to be honest.  You are no better then those you call cowards.  You quit at the first sign of adversity.  What idiot came up with the term “illegal war”?  What do you people insist you are progressive?  You are most definitely not!

You’re losers, quiters and cowards.  Crawl back in your holes.

  • Comment #31037 by Elle Shepard  on  10/21  at  9:51 am

    Dear Kevin,

I loved your piece.. it was so moving I sat at the computer and wept. I have friends over there. One just wrote to me day before yesterday. His letter was upsetting because he was discouraged and disilusioned and that scared the bejeebers out of me - why? Because this young man is an officer in the US Army and when he set out for Iraq he was full of patriotism and gung ho attitude - he “wanted to get the job done”!

Less than a year later, he realises with a sickening reality that under the present leadership and administration, that will never happen. When He arrived in Iraq - he sent weekly missives out to all of us with articles that supported the war and the tactics and the mission. He would always give the old Whooo - ahhhh at the end of each email. I hated those letters - but I supported him and avoided comment on the articles he send as much as possible. I figured with people taking pot shots at he and his fellow soldiers each day he didn’t need to add mine as well.

Now everything has changed and he knows there was absolute truth in what little I did relate to him about my feelings about this war and his sacrifice… and yours...and Pats. He’s still willing to give his life for all of us.. for “the cause”, for those careless politicians and those hate mongering talk show hosts who spew so much venom at anyone who DARES speak the truth - that no one knows if the next knock at the door will be someone from “homeland security” (what a colossal joke) to arrest you.

I don’t want to give up quite yet Kevin - and I am glad you haven’t… and from the content of the responses you have received - it looks like we, who support the troops but also support the TRUTH, are still very much alive and kicking...To everyone out there who wants this to end and for America to get back on track with honor - I say as my friend would say WHOOOO AHHHHH!!!!! Don’t sit at home this election day!

Hugs to all of you ,
    Elle

    Mr. Tillman,

I am truly sorry for my errors of judgment.  I watched the debates of 2003 and voted for Bush.  I also watched Mr. Powell’s UN speech and concluded that going into Iraq was necessary.  I thought that I was being a good, prudent American.  I owe it to you, your brother Pat, and all U.S. soldiers to become a better citizen and a more educated voter.  You fought for me and I should have been fighting for you.

    My most sincere apologies,
    Ryan Weaver

Kevin, my profound thanks to you for writing this superb piece.  I cannot tell you when I have been more moved.  My eyes were truly opened by this.  Please accept my sincere condolences to you and your family for this tragic and totally unnecessary loss.

I want to thank Kevin and his brother for their service, and extend my sympathies in regards to his brother giving his life in Afghanistan. But I cannot disagree more strongly with Kevin’s views. Frankly, the term “illegal war” is wrong. The U.N. had how many resolutions in regards to not only WMD’s, but also human rights violations by Iraq? Just because certain countries do not cast a vote in favor of the United States saving the U.N. from becoming irrelevant, does not mean that it was “illegal” to go to Iraq. France and Russia were more concerened about their corrupt scams with Iraq than weather Iraq had WMD’s (although their intelligence agencies agreed with the United States and Great Britain about WMD’s). Bottom line, the hate for President Bush is beyond silly, and only demonstrates how truly spoiled and and unaware people are, who let their feelings inure them to the facts and reality.

  • Comment #31032 by Art DesJardins  on  10/21  at  9:48 am

    Kevin,
You and your brother are the American patriots of our present based on the ideals of our past.
You state in a clearer manner and from the heart what so many of us feel about how our government has lied to us and the world about why we invaded Iraq.
I applaud your call for all of us to vote out those who led us to this situation but the fault in our political system is that at this point only the already wealthy and connected can be nominated, fund a campaign and get elected.
I want to note that there is such a thing as a write-in vote on our ballots and urge Americans to start to use this right and option to bypass the powers that be and elect the kind of leaders we really need not just those the wealthy want to fund for us.
I read a short statement in an article several months ago that sums up what we now have, it said that we used to have statesmen and now we only have politicians. A Statesman does things because they are right regardless of the cost. A politician does things because they are expedient. Our current administration takes expedient to a new low with its abuses of our rights and freedoms and those of people around the world.
Kevin, you are so right that everyone in our country and around the world should read and act on your letter.
I will be voting on election day and urge all Americans to do so. Support those who speak for truth but remember that most politicians will say whatever they think you want to hear to get your vote.
Keep up the fight for truth about what our government is doing that is wrong and get us back on the path to be the best nation in the world.
    Art

Even the comments here demonstrate the delusional state of much of the U.S. citizenry. Nice eulogy to your brother; but this and the comments still beat around the bush (so to speak).

U.S. democracy has always been a limited franchise—just ask the indians and blacks. Workers. The poor. The Third World. What’s different now is that it’s openly no franchise at all anymore. It’s now officially a closed shop. Not “Murder Inc.”, but “Murder Ltd.”

And so now it is time for revolution again—not for voting Tweedledum over Tweedledee in a rigged game. And I hope your brother died understanding that, even if he never articulated it, even in his own mind.

Dear Kevin, My sincerest condolences for the loss of your brother. Because of your unique position and experience, you have the moral authority to spread the word about the incredible decay that is rotting our country. I applaud you for it and encourage you to continue. I just hope you’re right about this country still being a democracy.

  • Comment #31024 by mcol  on  10/21  at  9:39 am

Kevin, I can’t thank you enough for having the courage to stand up and speak the truth.

It’s easy to blame the smooth talking wannabe’s who hold political power for what has transpired, but the truth is that ‘we the people’ let it happen.  Where were ‘we’ when this infernal collection of well fed villians told us that we could wage global war with no consequences??? Instead of asking hard questions we settled for political double talk and crumbs from the master’s table. The tax free Hummers and gargantuan SUV’s, the zero interest loans and manic speculations on tacky McMansions, the endless trips to the shopping mall, they were all gaudy trinkets used to buy us off

No one stopped to ask why, as country at war, we had an energy policy that continued to finance the terrorists that we were supposed to be fighting. No one asked why the only people being asked to sacrifice were the members of the military and their families. No one asked why an entourage of debased, corrupt, contaminated partisan political operatives were elevated to the status of legitimate decision makers

When people get greedy and stupid at the same time bad things always happen.

Your letter, and the courage that both you and your brother have shone, are a shining beacon to those of us who think that there is still time to change things.

Let’s go to the polls and make Pat’s birthday the moment when we all stand up together and say,” I’m mad as hell and I won’t take it anymore!!!!!”

    Amen.

Kevin, your words break down the barriers of denial that I sometimes feel when confronted with the wars we are responsible for. Nothing I can say can heal your hurt, so all I can personally add is, God bless!

However, there is one more thing all of us can do.

Sergio Ortega said it for me, but I will repeat it:

Let us honor the memory of Pat Tillman’s sacrifice, so eloquently expressed by his brother Kevin’s tribute here, by voting in this election. And not only voting ourselves, but urging our friends and neighbors to vote, too. Vote like the future depends on it.

    Because it does.

  • Comment #31020 by malvais  on  10/21  at  9:35 am

I am truly touched and sorry for your suffering and the loss of your brother, and so many other like him.  I am very sorry you had to go through this, and I wish you strength to recover some peace of mind someday.  Life is worth living.  You have been brave and survived.  I have a couple of family members who were deployed to Afghanistan, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia, but fortunately both emerged with their lives intact, though one was severly wounded in the Riyadh bombing.  They volunteered, but they didn’t ask for my opinion before they left.  I would have told them not to go.  I had a university student who signed up to go; I tried to tell him not to, but he got angry with me.  I don’t know what happened to him.

In fact, there were many, many of us--if not at least 50% then a significant percentage--against Bush, and then against the Iraq War even before it started. So, 300 million people didn’t send you there.  150 million, perhaps--or less, because the number only includes those who actually are eligible to vote and DID vote.  At our house, we put up a NO War in Iraq sign in our driveway; our neighbors tore it down twice.

It isn’t any consolation, but I’ll tell you my truth:  I knew these were all lies before it happened.  It was obvious and there for anyone to see who didn’t let their emotions overcome their understanding of unfolding events, and who didn’t have some ideal vision of America getting in the way of evaluating circumstances.  It’s true that the history of US involvement globally has historically been shot through with direct or indirect interventions like this.  If more Americans really understood our country’s history, they might be less inclined to believe the jargon next time.  Venal, corrupt, ruthless and destructive politicians occur in every time and every place--all we have learned is that we aren’t any better, necessarily, than anyone else when it comes to atrocities, or at least that we have the same capacity to commit those kinds of crimes.

The other problem is that most military infantry are poor people, such as those family members I mentioned, who saw this as an economic opportunity.  That is a tragedy.  We are the richest country in the world--our people should not have to die and be traumatized in war to be able to afford college, health care, or just a salary and way out of their dead-end life flipping burgers.  The whole system is the problem.

Americans need to read more history.  American history and WORLD history.  And they need to somehow at once maintain some hope and optimism and at the same time be critically aware and have astute judgment about politics.  It’s too easy to let ideology and rhetoric cloud our minds.  It takes a HUGE, constant, effort to try to understand political situations and not look the other way because it’s too difficult, but it is crucial.  Otherwise, same story next time.

You’re making a difference.  Congratulations to you.  And thank you.

Kevin, my heart goes out to your whole family and you.  Thank you for writing such an eloquent tribute to your brother Pat.  I hope that you’re right about the fact that America is still a democracy.  I do not trust the people in power and am afraid that they will either pull some horrible “October surprise” to cancel the elections...or that they have rigged the propietary software, purged the voting roles, or perpetrated one more crime to ensure that they stay in power.

The baby boomers made their voices heard by standing hand in hand (in front of government buildings), not blog to blog.....  This piece is inspirational, but as the saying goes…

“If YOUR government lies to YOU and YOU do nothing about it, who’s at fault??”

  • Comment #31016 by Steve  on  10/21  at  9:29 am

How unfortunate the death of an American, how unfortunate even more so that there are so many non-American striking out against the leaders of this nation. I have a news flash for you, the Democrats CAN’T do a better job. I served my country proudly, and WON’T sully my tour of duty about speaking against it. I support the US of A and the troops. I wonder how this would be going if they were spilling across our borders?? Hmmm, I wonder how loud people would be screaming then? I weep everytime one of my brothers in arms dies.

Thank you for going public with your information.  Thank you to you and Pat for all you gave up for us. What I don’t understand is why is no-one held accountable for this mess?  What does that tell you about our whole system. Goldie Mauir once said, when we love our children more than we love war, then war will never be....
My respect and Love are given to you and your family......

I am sorry for the loss of all American service man/women.  But what are we to do?  Sit around and discuss what needs to be while those who are trying to harm us plan their next attack?  I do not agree with everything that comes out of Washington, but at least we are taking the fight to them opposed to having it be waged in the streets of every American city.

  • Comment #31011 by Rohan  on  10/21  at  9:21 am

We no longer support our Country, but NOW we stand behind a party whether they are wrong.  This is treason to our country in itself.  These parties do not support the citizens but they campaing backers.  We now have become what we protested - Germany, Korea, the Soviets, Iran, the SHAH...etc.  This is okay now because so many people are profiting from this.

People of America and The World,
Our maker The Lord will one day hold court and render judgement upon those who have knowingly ruined thousands of lives and brought pain to the world. Rest assure God will bring justice to those, and I can’t wait. Those who have died and suffered will be rewarded in the next life forever. We all know that there is life after death because there isn’t a person in this world that can obtain true happines in this world even if you are the richest “oil guy”. That is because our spirits and souls have a natural tendency to keep yearning and lookig for that “something” even when you have all the money and power in the world. You’re still unhappy. That is because those corrupted do not realize that their spirits are searching for God, until it is too late. To all of those who have knowingly lied and caused pain, supported death and loss of innocent life be it in war or abortion clinics..............GOOD LUCK STANDING IN FRONT OF GOD..........!!!!!

Part of the truth and very well said.

You all are missing the part that isn’t covered by the media though. The media only covers that which causes hate and discontent.  Why not show the good story?  Why talk about the one rape that happened today instead of the 50 people saved by a soldier?  The public deserves to know.
The saved lives of the tortured Iraqi’s.
Schools for the women, who where nothing less then slaves to a radical idiology.
The groups that now have a say in the Iraqi government that were persecuted and hunted like deer just a few years ago.

I am not saying that this war was started for the correct reasons.  Even the hard line Republican that I consider myself has been questioning what is still going on.

We have helped thousands.  We have saved thousands.  Yes a few hundred die every day, but it sounds like 10 times that many use to die under a dictator that we took out.

I served during a time of war and had my chance.  I also know those who lose loved ones question the need twice as much as those that do not.  I am lucky and have not lost a loved one in the war.

The only way we can stop this is on Election day.  Vote for the lessor of two evil’s.  Maybe one day we will have a 3rd party that can actually win an election that isn’t bought and paid for by big business.

Someone has finaly put the entire Iraq into tis proper perspective. Someone who has every right to do so, and speaks from personal experience and loss. Mike Tillman put it all on the line and that gives him more right than anyone to speak out. Now I know what he and his brother were doing, they wanted to expose the Bush administrattion for every thing it was, and put themselves in harms way to do it. They have exposed the coward Dick Cheney for everything he really is.

  • Comment #31002 by Sandra  on  10/21  at  9:10 am

    Dear Mr. Tillman,
You have written the most profound letter I have ever read about this war with Iraq. All you have said is the truth. I am 64 years of age and have seen many wars through those years. I was still old enough to remember WWll via radio and President Roosevelt.s fireside chats and President Truman’s “the buck stops here”. I watched as President Kennedy was assassinated right before your eyes. I remember, what was called “The Korean Conflict”...yet another war. My tears fell as our men and women came home from the “Viet Nam War” and were spat upon. I thought I had seen it all, but I was mistaken. There was yet another war we would have to send out young men and women out to fight, Iraq!
I am not sure if any war is really the right one to send men and women to die in. And have the innocent die in, too. But if there was any unjust war, any war we should not be in is Iraq. This war was started based on lies. Our President lied to the American people and world, which supported it because of WMD.
I have said since the first election Bush ran for and won illegally (hanging chads etc.) and our country let it go...did nothing that we were never going to be the same country again. With a regime that could buy and sell this country without a blink of an eye, commit illegal acts, not have to answer to the people that hired them, and break every law in this land that America as we once knew it would never be the same.
What amazes me is that the majority of the people disagree with the way this regime is handling things, but doing nothing but giving lip service. We have lost the “fight” and will let this kind of behavior to continue until America is no more run by its people. Politics is no longer what one can do for his country; it is a well paying job with many perks. It is all about money and now the religious zealots that think their religion and way of thinking is the “only true” religion. They are nothing but the “Taliban” here in the United States of America. They cannot and should not run politics, but are. They are no different from the religious zealots in any other country that thinks their way of thinking should become everyone’s religious beliefs, i.e. Iraq /Taliban. But the worse shame is on the politicians that will do and say anything to become elected via religious zealots, special interest groups and lobbying. The list goes on and our country has been sold out and we are, as you said, no longer respected by other countries.
My tears flow for you and your family. They flow for every man and woman serving and for their families.
God Bless You, You.re Family, Our Men and Women Serving, their families and America Always.

Unfortunately, the ability to develop an independent thought is going the way of the dinosaur. As well as looking at ourselves(as a nation) to “see” our shortcomings. Whatever they may be. The truth can be ugly, but acknowledging it and doing something about it, is how you make things better. Im tired of playing follow the leader and told what to think and how to feel. This independent will vote. And with the new electronic voting machines, will be glued to the t.v. to find out who i voted for.

Now, let your words be the fingers that pry the blindfolds off of the spoon-fed masses watching their “objective” TV news and regurgitating Rush Limbau. Pray that we don’t simply trade one group of self serving elitists for another on election day and that honest, humanitarian, American government is more than idealistic fantasy.

    Hello, Kevin.
First of all, i am deeply sorry for the tragedy your family has had to go through.  As a former Army green beret, i know what it is to be constantly in arms way.
Thank you for expressing what everyone in the special ops community--secretly--has being saying: this war is about politics, money, oil, and some madman in the white house that never had the testicles to “fight” for his country during Vietnam, but was more than “gungho” to send America’s best to fight his private agenda.
Take care, Kevin! All of us are with you and your family.  It’s time to vote some of that crap of their feet.

    Revelation 3
    1.  ...  These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.
    2.  Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God.
    3.  Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.

    Revelation 16
    1.  Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, “Go, pour out the seven bowls of God’s wrath on the earth.”
    2.  The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the land, and ugly and painful sores broke out on the people who had the mark of the beast and worshiped his image.
    3.  The second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it turned into blood like that of a dead man, and every living thing in the sea died.
    4.  The third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water, and they became blood.
    5.  Then I heard the angel in charge of the waters say: “You are just in these judgments, you who are and who were, the Holy One, because you have so judged;
    6.  for they have shed the blood of your saints and prophets, and you have given them blood to drink as they deserve.”
    7.  And I heard the altar respond: “Yes, Lord God Almighty, true and just are your judgments.”
    8.  The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and the sun was given power to scorch people with fire.
    9.  They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God, who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent and glorify him.

Kevin, no more need be said. You have written concisely and movingly what many of us have known for years.

If after Nov.7, given the current poll numbers, these so-called Republicans, consrvartives without conscious, as John Dean so aptly put it, quoting no less than Barry Goldwater, still control either Body of Congress, citizens with a conscious should declare , in writing, that we no longer recognize this government as legitimate, and will in no way support it.

We should also declare that we, the people, will not recognize any law passed, nor any permanent appointments by this government, after January 2000, as legitimate.

If the Congress does change hands, then we must demand that those who are responsible for the nightmare which Kevin describes be held accontable to the fulleest extent of both Constitutional law, as it existed prior to January, 2000, and International Law.

These actions are our last chance to be Americans, as we have understood that term. They are our last chance to remain free.

Kevin, I just read your piece and was very astonished with your truthfulness. I am so sorry that you and your family lost your BROTHER PAT. I wish that the both of you could turn back the hands of time so none of this would’ve happened. I watched your brother play football at ASU and with the Arizona Cardinals and he was an outstanding young player who would have made the Pro Bowl if he would’ve continued playing. I hope that you and your family can resolve this terrible issue and put it to rest because what you and your brother did was very honorable and well respected. Good luck to you and your family.

Sorry to say that I wonder when the slander campaign will come out against you after this becomes more public though now.  I can see it now..."oh, this guy is just harboring ill will and is a doubter.” Will enjoy watching them squirm under the weight of your statements and their inability to knock you off of the “patriot stump” that all doubters of this disaster get thrown into.  Agree with all the others above who stand in your corner so resolutely.  Take those big shoulders of yours and bear the weight of whatever campaigners come out against your statements.  We KNOW you’re right.

I feel this pain with you, and more importantly I have sent this article by email just now to all I know...so that they too can understand what has happened ....and how they and everyone they know....COULD, SHOULD and WILL go to the polls on the day after Pat’s Birthday.
If this does not motivate them to vote and do what is right for your brother and all those other soldiers...and to do what is right for this country....then I can NOT know what would!!??

While you have my condolences you and your brother volunteered for service. Death is a part of that. Are you serious that we should not have gone into to Afghanistan? That is an unjust war? I believe bitterness is creeping up on you. Maybe we should not be in Iraq, thats deefinately up for debate, but Afghan. gov’t helped the terrorists Al-quada kill, in America some 3,000 people. I think you are letting your grief get the better of you.

I wonder how long it will take for Secretary of Defense Ronald Dumsfield (he is not Donald Rumsfield to me) to write a book admitting that it was a huge mistake to invade Iraq without a clue as to what that it would mean in the long run. He could always use former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara’s book as an example. McNamara admitted that the Vietnam war was a mistake. For more than 50,000 Americans that were killed in Vietnan, McNamara writing about this “mistake” came a little late for most Americans, including those of us who fought in that despicable war.

We have to remember for the rest of our lives 9/11, as this is his birthday.  We can no longer be happy on this day and think proudly of the lies told to the American public. The reason we are sending young soliders to fight this money making effort, for George W. Bush and his clan.

Then be told we are not patriotic. To be patriotic means I have to swallow everything my government tells me?

    Kevin,

My son went through Ranger Training at Fort Benning with Pat. Please give this to your father. I wrote this for my son, a Bronze Star Army Ranger Captain, before he went to Iraq.

    ARISE MY SON
    through Steve Savage

Arise my Beloved Prince! Face the morning Sun!
For there to the East in Desolate Lands,
The War I feared has begun.
    I knew this day was coming;
I knew it from the start.
Why was I chosen among all men
    To sire your magnificent heart?
Your Majestic Father, the King of all Kings,
    Has sorely tested my faith and belief;
How could He not know I would love you,
    Perhaps bear some unspeakable grief?
Why weren.t you born of wealth and fame,
The son of some higher man?
Then mercifully I could live in Darkness,
    Blinded to His Heavenly Plan.
I hear the Archangel.s Trumpet, my son,
Calling the Warriors from out of the West.
    The Time of Battle is upon us;
You must now take your place with the rest.
    How strong and straight you are, my son;
I.m so filled with loving pride.
You are the image of your Heavenly Father
By whom both of us were tried.
    Go quickly now to do your Father.s Work;
I dare no more to speak.
    Please don.t look back at your old Dad;
Just kiss me on the cheek.

    Wow,

Clearly Kevin is an intelligent young man much like Pat.  It’s a shame to see this type of group use him . I hope he was paid well.  When one reads the posts in response to Kevin’s letter, it becomes clear there is little room for factual debate in this group.  The War in Iraq is certainly open to debate, but when people use nonsense such as “blood for oil” they lose credibility.  When people choose to rewrite history and assert that regime change in Iraq was only the policy of right-wing Republicans, they lose creditability.  When people act as if Iraq did nothing wrong before we invaded, they lose credibility.  At that point you aren’t digging for truth—you’re getting buried in falsehoods.

I just hope the truth gets out about how Pat died.  It sounds like a crime may have been committed.  The government needs to tell the truth.  They owe that to every solider.

  • Comment #30965 by Jess  on  10/21  at  8:41 am

Very eloquently written by an obviously very deeply pained man.
I’ve read all the posted comments.
Ironically, no one makes mention of the pain suffered by the victims and their families on 9/11.Who do they blame for that?
No one makes mention that Pat Tillman died at the hands of his fellow soldiers...a grievious mistake, a lack of training...a lapse in judgment...what, why?
When men enlist and accept the consequences of becoming a “warrior”...do they really realize and comprehend those consequences? Kevin Tillman
apparently did not and is just now seeing the reality of how brutal humankind is, has been, and will continue to be.
The true “values” and democracy that Kevin Tillman decries as having been wrested from us by our political leaders never really existed except in the idealistic minds of those that failed to see the world in it’s true light. Our country has NEVER been loved by the rest of the world ...the world loves/loved our money ..we have NEVER been the beacon of virtue, morality or benevolence...we just deluded ourselves into wanting to believe that. Read the historical accounts of this country from it’s inception when the pilgrims arrived. Killing, subterfuge, and “might makes right” has always prevailed....humans are violent, humans fight to be in control...somebody wins, somebody loses...that the history of humans on this world. Americans are no different...we just claim we are...but the facts don’t support that notion..eg: WW I, WW II, etc etc...atom bombs on Japan....Nazi atrocities...etc etc etc
It’s very sad to read the comments posted and realize that so many people still want to create a country that never was.
Study history. Open your minds and your eyes.We are what we are, and it’s not the fault of Bush, Rumsfeld or any other leader we chose to vilify because we refuse to acknowledge that they are a mirror reflection of all of us...doing what we’ve always done.....

    Dear Kevin,

Thank you so much for speaking out.  For making comments like this about Bush and his cronies and what has been going on I have been called everything from a Communist to a coward and traitor to the US.  While the sheep in this county live their comfortable lives in ignorance sucking on the breast of Bush admin propaganda for all they are worth, we have gone from a democracy to a fascist country where reason is ignored and exercising your right to free speech makes you treasonous.

I saw the other day that only 20% of Americans have passports, and of course not all of those who hold them have been overseas yet.  They believe the endless stream of lies and propaganda from the adminsitration and have no interest in considering other viewpoints because it is easy and feeds their egos to think we are the best at everything and we know all and know what is best for every person in the world.

The stupidity of the adminsitration who refuses to change its illegal and criminal policies while they rape the wealth of the country and the world..... it is beyond my understanding how Americans who profess to believe in the constitution will not only stand for it but support it whole heartedly.

I don’t think anyone can question your record or your motives.  You are a true American hero and I salute you !

  • Comment #30961 by Justice  on  10/21  at  8:38 am

Definitely a moving piece, but did it really say anything or was it simply a commentary?  Were innocent Americans not flown directly into large buildings?  It makes me wonder why people are so quick to forget this.  I’m curious to hear Kevin’s suggestions for the future of America, keeping in mind that this world is no Utopia, not when we are constantly threatened because others religious beliefs lead them to a primal hatred of what we stand for.

Lots of complaints, no solutions.  I’m sorry that your brother was the victim of a bureaucratic military’s mismanagement.  He’s a hero to me and represents what’s still right with America.  Do you?

  • Comment #30960 by James McCutcheon  on  10/21  at  8:37 am

I just want to say thank you, Kevin. Your words express the sentiments of many Americans who have been labelled as unpatriotic for voicing them. The fact that these words come from you give them so much more meaning (you, who have made the ultimate sacrifice for your country, who have actually gone to battle--unlike the orchestrators of the tragedy in Iraq-- who have lost not only one brother, but probably many brothers and sisters). It took courage for you to speak out like this. But then, you have already shown yourself to be the most courageous, and most patriotic, of all of us. Thank you again.

Kevin, Thank you a thousand times for speaking the truth!
To those of you that do not have the years and knowledge of Lifewriter, do not think by voting for the other party you will help change things for the better.
Learn the true history of the country from historians like Thomas Dilorenzo and Thomas E. Woods. Understand that you have been manipulated/lied to by court historians and gatekeepers since your school days.
Then go on to learn about the nature of the state (mises.org has many book recommendations).
You will understand how politicians of all colors have been using the power of the state since its existence to enhance their power and wealth (and of monied interest groups) thereby pilfering the wealth and taking away the liberty of their constituency.
There is only one Representative in Congress that persues other ambitions. Dr. Ron Paul from Texas wants to educate people. Naturally he gets no support from the lobbyists in Congress (both parties). You could make this lonely voice of truth be heard.

  • Comment #30955 by Terry  on  10/21  at  8:32 am

It takes courage to write a response as Kevin has done. It takes courage to stand up to despots, dictators and murders who hold government offices. It takes a certain strength to protest against the crimes of our government.

Yet, anyone who is paying their federal income taxes (45% of which goes to fund these illegal wars) is not truly protesting. It is how you vote with your money which demonstrates where ones heart is, and not how you cast you ballot or what kind of sign you hold in your hand.

  • Comment #30954 by Damien  on  10/21  at  8:30 am

Unfortunately, we live in a political climate in which Kevin’s words will be considered “un-American”.  Today, reason is suffocated by a political game in which the desires of a few are disguised as “fighting for freedom” with an unfair association with Christianity.  Could Jesus truly be a supporter of war?  Many will say, “YES!” I guess that is a topic for another occasion.  I must admit that the ability of the government to sway a nation is impressive.  Somehow, John marrying John became one of the most important issues our country faces while open discussion on the morality of our place in Iraq was dismissed with lines like “they hate our freedom.” I was all for going after Bin Laden.  Hell, I considered joining the Army myself after the attacks but lacked that special quality to overcome my hesitations.  As for Kevin, I hope people realize that he is not “ranting.” He is speaking a truth that some do not want us to know.

Thank-you for having the bravery to “defend” our great country.

Thank-you for using your voice of experience and reason to shed light on the current situation—a situation much obscurred by media sound bites and misaligned politics.

Kevin, I will not demean you or your family for the sacrifice you have endured, but, since you affirm we are still a democracy, I will respectfully disagree with your position.  This country is still the ONLY nation left on earth that has the capacity to back up its rhetoric, and there is little reason to have the big stick if we are unwilling to use it.  Fighting wars has never been a popular action in this country, with loyal opposition being very vocal in every conflict we have faced, from the beginning.  I will not argue the views that differ from yours, simply because we ARE a democracy, and you are entitled to your opinion.  That ability to oppose each other respectfully is the very foundation of this country, and when that right is lost (as is happening in the middle east)we will cease to exist.  Please accept my heartfelt thanks for your service, accept our mutual grief on the loss of Pat, and understand that I respect the heartfelt thoughts you shared.  I sincerely disagree with many (not all) of them.

That was amazing. It’s extremely sad that we have soldiers dying over there for an unknown cause. Why are we there? the reasons that the administration give prove false over and over, I remember when one of the justifications was “imagine what saddam would have had in his arsenal, if we had not invaded.”
People need the truth, its not about liberals and conservatives, it’s about us settling our differences so we can realize what’s going on in the government. I’m very sorry about your brother.

would he have written this if his brother hadn’t died?
Can anyone tell me why we brothered with ww1 or ww2? for that matter why the civil war? would it have not been better to just let the south have their own country?
think of how many lifes we lost for that war.
Did you know the reason for the war really had nothing to do with slavery.
we could stand and do nothing in every war, or cause.
If that’s what we’re about, then let’s just turn our back on the world, because any cause is not worth dying for.
would it have been so bad to let hitler have france.
we lost 400,000 young men for that lie, yes, fdr lied about the reason we went to war.
so let us come home and pay no attention to the killing fields, around the world, will drink tea and coffee at the U.N. and do nothing, pat ourselves on the back at the end of the day, pretend we did something and do nothing.
If we are now governed by world law, then we should let the world control our army then Mr. tillman could write about how unfair that is.
Pat tillman was sadly killed by is his own troops.
I say we have them tried in the hauge. under international law.
evil will grow unchecked if good man, or country’s do nothing.
If that’s what you’re all want, then bitch no more about evil gas companies, mean people or anything else, even the worlds straving.
let n. korea have the bomb, better yet let them use the bomb, if it’s not on us, why should we care; not our problem, not our fight, not our war.
let them all die. now that’s a liberal plan i can believe in.

It is about time the military families speak out and hold this adminstration accountable. The patroit act replaces the constitution. The geneva convention is thashed. The bill of rights no longer applies. Habeas Corpus doesn’t matter. The question becomes not what America stands for but what America has fallen for? What are our brave men and women dying for? When are we going to have to disarm the army we’ve just armed? Bring our soldiers home and end this insanity. Restore integrity and honesty to America. Hold those who are responsible for this fisaco on November 7.

Extremely well said! My condolences on the loss of your brother, which is all of ours as well.

Sadly, Mr. Tillman, though we may have “democracy” we do not have a real multiparty system. Therefore a vote on the day after your brother’s birthday will inevitably be for one or the other wing of the same war party. Which party is in favor of an end to illegal wars overseas? Neither. That means we have no real vote. It’s all a charade to keep the same elite in power.

Dear Kevin : I was sorry to read about your brother, and I was disappointed to see so many GOP line up for W. from 1998-2000 when he “won” in a contested election, where there may have been fraud. The US led invasion of Iraq war I opposed and knew since my 1980’s Social Studies class that our country’s gov. let Saddam “have his way” while they fought Iran which had taken American hostages and was misled by the Shah, and taken further astray by The Ayatollah Khomeini.
I stood for Election in 1998 for US Congress on the Republican and Right To Life Party lines in 1998, 4th Federal district NY State, since I have served the Town of Hempstead as Accountant 1985-90 while attending HS, was active in the Social Studies Club and worked as the Election inspector, earned a scholarship to the Catholic University where I was the Founder and President of the Student Chapter of Amnesty International, the anti-torture group led by Jesuit Priest Jack Healey when I joined in 1984, and have served honorably on the Board of Directors for the Victims of Pan Am Flight #103, and lobbied the US Senate, and met personally with former US Sec.State Albright,Bill Richardson at the UN, Sandy Berger, National Security Adviser to help prosecute the terrorist war criminals of Iran-Libya and Syria who paid for and planned and carried out the bombing, which killed my brother Mark Lawrence Christopher Tobin and 269 others on the 8th day of Hannakah 1988 in Lockerbie, Scotland, and there has been no retaliation against Gaddaffi, or taking him into custody to answer for war crimes as Saddam Hussein was and Slobodan Milosevic was, or shooting him like the Communist dictator Ceacescu.
Since I did not win and was only named Party Builder for the Nassau County GOP Committee by past failed chairman Joseph P.Mondello Sr., the incumbent “Democrat” Carolyn McCarthy has signed the Iraq War authorization and was protested by the LI Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives outside “The People’s Office” in Hempstead, and has signed Unfunded Federal Mandates. I have also recently earned the Award of Appreciation for my 87 lifetime blood donations to the NYState Blood Center for my charitable work over my 36 years with the Catholic Church and some synagogues and an Ethical Humanist Society.
I would like to serve you honorably as the anti-Iraq war, anti-tax, pro-life candidate for US Congress 2008,on Libertarian, Right To Life and maybe also Republican party lines. Thanks in advance for your time and cooperation, and Federally Insured Bank Checks drawn on US Banks may be used for political purposes, not personal ones in accordance with FEC Laws.Respectfully Yours, Dan Tobin, 115 Atlantic Ave Apt 2A, Hempstead,NY 11550-1204

I can hardly articulate my feelings after reading your letter.  I am a retired Marine having spent 22 years in both the active and reserve components of the Corps with service in Vietnam and activation in Desert Storm.  I was always a gung ho warrior for any war we fought.  It wasn’t until I retired that I delved into the aspects of Vietnam, realizing slowly with study that there was no way from the beginning that we could have won that conflict.  Being older and much smarter, the diversion of assets from Afghanistan to Iraq was a red flag not to be ignored.  Our military assets are used by those who were unwilling to serve when it was their time to do so and are sending our troops to a slaughter pen.  The tragic and senseless loss of Pat was a defining moment of the debacle.., causing me to recall a comment attributed to General C.F. Smith, when directed by Gen. Grant to take Fort Donelson, on the Cumberland River, shouting to his men “You volunteered to be killed for the love of your country, and now you can be...I’m only a soldier and I don’t want to be killed, but you came to be killed...” This is the same rhetoric we now hear from those who bluster about “stay the course.” On November 7 we all must vote to change this and kick out the Profiteers and draft dodgers who have taken over our government.

unless the two party system(republicans and democrats both 100% corrupt) is changed to allow for other political parties to have access, this nation is doomed and will never recover.
99% of the US population has become brainwashed, manipulated, and got no clue what is happening in the USA or the world.
the seed of all of this mind control and hell, has been the mass murder on 9/11 cover up by this administration, people need to investigate the facts of 9/11.

Kevin, you and Pat embody the traits of a truly patriotic American.  A true patriot speaks up when he/she sees the values this country stands for being tossed aside in the name of some mythological bulls**t.  It is our duty as citizens of this country to make it stop.  Apathy and fear will eventually end the American Dream if we let it. The next time you hear “stay the course”...shout it down.  The next time you hear some politician tell you gay marriage will destroy the country...shout it down.  The next time you hear the phrase “cut and run” being used...shout it down.  Remaining silent is not an option.  Shout them down after Pat’s birthday...and don’t stop shouting until we get our country back.  God bless America.

I would like to know if “our elected leaders” hadn’t done what they did, what would have happened? There has not been another 9/11 since 2001, thousands of innocent Iraqis have not been slaughterd and thrown in unmarked graves since ... I always think about the historical events when America always came to the rescue at the end and saved the World!

The fact is we always want peace, the terrorists never do. What should we do, talk (again? LOL) or step back and witness another 9/11?

I’m greatly sorry for your loss. After I heard the tragic news about your brother, I wasn’t well for days…

What a great writing Kevin!  I hope the overly jingoistic NFL will give you a forum for your thoughts.  You’re a true patriot, and I salute your courage in everyway.

Kevin Tillman is a COWARD!  Pat Tillman would be ashamed of having a brother like Kevin.  One who holds his personal feelngs until election time.  How convenient is that?  It’s ok that Kevin Tillman disagrees with the war.  It’s ok that he hates the President.  He fought for the right to have those opinions heard.  But when Kevin Tillman uses his brothers death as a political tool, he becomes a despicable person.  Yes, Pat died a horrible death.  But Kevin is dishonoring his brother and all that he stood for because he is using Pat’s death to make a political statement.  As a fellow military member, I am embarrassed that he could stoop to the depths of Cindy Sheehan and use a family member’s death, at election time, to make a political point.  Shame on you Kevin Tillman.

    Dear Kevin:

    Warm Greetings!

You were just a brave soldier when joining the army, but you’re now my hero for saying these moving, thruthful and courageous words.

Your sincere, poweful words moved me to the core and left me speechless, choked with tears. Now that I have taken a deep breath, I want to say,"May God bless the soul of your fallen hero brother Patrick, and mat the sacrifices of one noble family, the Tillman, inspire you to continue on a path of corrective activism; so, per chance, we can restore to this hijacked country of ours the dignity it deserves before it’s too late!”

    With love and gratitude,

    Fadel A.

    Dear Kevin,

Something must be done, but democratic involvement -the duty of each citizen- is equated with one vote every few years (if that).  Therefore while our soldiers are doing their duty -and fulfilling their contract- WE the people and those that we have placed to govern are cheering them on from the sidelines, nay from thousands of miles away!  To bully other, less “advanced” peoples with older cultures.
The Bush administration while continuing to sow the seeds for future conflict is building on the foundations of past doctrine. And this blind Americanism growing out of fear, ignorance and the pursue of luxury is like a sickness, effecting the world.  It gives more ruthless regimes not only excuses and justifications, but examples to follow and lessons on public terrorism.
This tradition goes back all the way past Columbus to the Crusades (about which the vatican has apologized, publicly) and Rome.

1- Religion must be separated from politics. We cannot have in the future the catholics against the evangelicals both calling each other the devil. What about the rest of US.

2- The people of this country, whether oldtimers or newcomers, must come to terms and acknowledge that we have come and build our houses on top of Indian Gravestones.  I don’t believe in witchcraft, but if the bottle -when we christened this titanic- was filled with Indian Blood, then what type of voyage do we excpect to have.

3- Military service should be mandatory,

A)maybe then people in this country would be forced to think about sending their own children to war.
    B) The military would be then made up of more citizens and not just mercenaries.

this is perhaps one of the best written articles i have seen in some time, I was begining to doublt that there were anyone left that really understood what was going on, i have known since I was a teenager how the media distorts the truth having experienced it first hand. Keep writing, and do not give up!don’t be lulled into thinking that a change in admistration will make a difference, because democratic or republican they all bow to the same god. Money, power and control.

    Kevin:

Thanks for writing this work.  Supporters of the war need to stop romancing the realities of war.  Soldiers ultimately fight for those that are to the left and right of them.  When bullets start going down range its not about the American Flag and Apple Pie, it about those who will save your ass in the battlefield.

This article is very moving, and thought provoking. We are all disheartened by the lose of life in Iraq. I pray to God that this will end. I also pray for our leadership, whoever lt is, that they will be guided by the truth. Pat’s commitment to what he believed in is what changes our world. Bravery, in the face of Fear. I thank God for for his bravery, and ultimate sacrifrice for our way of life. We have not been attacked since 9/11 beacause of their commitment. There service should be honored and not forgotten. I also pray for truth for myself and our Nation. Remember, reactionism is what got us into Iraq. A vote for change is good. as long as you know what kind of change your voting for. Both current political parties have lead us down this path. Kevin’s letter should bring us to search out the truth. The one truth we all know is that change is not always good, especially if it is not motivated by the truth. Hitler called for change. Stallin called for change. The fact is that both parties, and our political system has gotten us to this point, and I believe its not one parties fault, it’s the systems fault. We need to change, and reform our political system to better represent the people. I also would like to know if this letter really was sent by Kevin Tillman, and I know anything can be published on the internet. Truth seeking sceptic.
